Chapter 11: The War Machine
The offensive began before Iacon’s walls were in range.
Soundwave heard it first as alignment.
Not engines.
Not weapons.
Not marching.
Alignment.
Across Decepticon territory, scattered movement became one motion. Ground columns that had waited in hidden staging zones began advancing along reinforced routes. Seeker wings lifted into layered assault formations above the outer approaches. Medical units moved behind the first wave. Engineering crews followed the heavy lines. Fuel convoys rolled beneath guarded air lanes, each one timed so no route became crowded enough for Autobot artillery to cripple the advance with a single strike.
The war machine moved because Soundwave had already placed its parts.
Praxis fed the eastern approach.
Polyhex supplied the heavy weapons lanes.
Kaon sent command reserves and medical support.
Tarn’s forces moved in disciplined ground formations behind Onslaught’s lead units.
Iacon waited ahead of them, bright and fortified beneath its towers.
For five years it had endured.
Today, Megatron intended to break it.
Soundwave stood within the forward command station established beyond Iacon’s outer range, his dark frame almost motionless before the communications grid. Around him, Decepticon officers moved through layers of reports, but none of them saw the full shape. They saw their lanes, their orders, their immediate problems.
Soundwave saw the whole offensive.
Every ground unit.
Every Seeker wing.
Every artillery position.
Every route that had to remain open.
Every route that had to close.
Every line of communication between command and battle passed through him, and each one returned cleaner than it arrived.
Megatron stood at the central projection with his arms folded behind him.
He was not yet in the field.
That was deliberate.
Optimus Prime would come out.
Megatron was certain of it.
The Prime had become Iacon’s center. If the capital came under enough pressure, he would not remain behind its walls and let others spend themselves in his name. He would step forward.
Megatron intended to be waiting when he did.
“Status,” Megatron said.
Soundwave answered while adjusting three troop channels and correcting a Seeker altitude overlap.
“Eastern assault line advancing. Northern pressure force in position. Southern breach engineers eight cycles from structural contact. Air command active. Autobot defenses responding across three outer sectors.”
Starscream’s voice cut across the aerial command channel at the same moment.
“Wing Two, rise above tower sweep. Do not let Iacon’s guns choose your altitude for you.”
The wing corrected.
Soundwave logged the adjustment and fed the altered airspace lane into the ground map. Artillery fire from Iacon’s outer towers followed a second later, missing the formation by the distance Starscream had created.
Efficient.
Soundwave marked it.
Starscream had the sky.
There was no hesitation in the Seeker formations now. They did not bunch, did not dive too eagerly, did not chase isolated targets into tower range. Starscream held them in layered motion, striking where Iacon’s defenses opened, withdrawing before counterfire trapped them, then returning from another angle before the Autobots could reset.
The sky above Iacon did not belong to the Decepticons yet.
But Starscream was teaching it to.
On the ground, Onslaught’s forces reached the first outer barricades.
The clash began there.
Not with spectacle, but pressure.
Heavy Decepticon units advanced behind shield cover while artillery fire struck the barricades in timed intervals. Iacon’s defenders answered with disciplined volleys from elevated positions along the outer wall. The first line held longer than projected.
Soundwave adjusted.
“Onslaught: left flank resistance stronger than model. Reinforce with Unit Nine. Do not commit reserves.”
Onslaught answered immediately.
“Unit Nine moving.”
No complaint.
No explanation.
Execution.
The left flank stabilized within minutes.
A second feed opened beside it.
Blitzwing.
Soundwave tracked the triple-changer’s live telemetry with particular attention. Shockwave had approved field use under monitored conditions, and monitored meant Soundwave carried the data as much as Shockwave did.
Blitzwing entered the northern engagement in jet mode, diving through a narrow break between Iacon’s tower fire and Seeker containment. He came in lower than a Seeker would prefer, faster than ground defenses expected. At the last possible moment he transformed, frame compressing and shifting hard into tank mode as he struck the road with enough force to crack the surface beneath him.
His cannon fired before the nearest Autobot squad adjusted.
The barricade split.
Decepticon ground units surged into the gap.
Blitzwing rolled forward through return fire, armor taking impacts that would have forced lighter units back. Then he transformed again, rising into robot mode amid the smoke to strike down two defenders attempting to reset the barricade from behind.
“Triple-changer deployment effective,” Soundwave transmitted to Shockwave’s channel.
Shockwave replied from the weapons analysis station.
“Stress?”
“Elevated. Within tolerance.”
“Continue monitoring.”
“Confirmed.”
Blitzwing transformed again, back into tank mode, and drove deeper into the breach.
Useful.
Very useful.
But the strain showed in the telemetry. Transformation load spiked higher with each sequence. Fuel consumption ran above standard projections. Cognitive delay remained minimal for now, but not absent.
Soundwave stored it.
War rewarded results.
Soundwave remembered costs.
Across the main projection, Iacon’s defenses brightened sector by sector as the offensive struck in layers. The northern rail pressure forced Ultra Magnus to reinforce the wall. The eastern route assault forced Springer’s mobile units to deploy. The southern bridge disruption drew engineers and reserves toward threatened infrastructure.
For the first time in years, Iacon was reacting everywhere at once.
Megatron watched the map without moving.
“Prime?” he asked.
“Not yet,” Soundwave replied.
Megatron’s jaw tightened slightly.
He waited.
That was not passivity.
It was bait.
The assault intensified.
Starscream’s wings rolled across the upper defenses, striking tower-mounted guns in rapid passes before climbing out of range. Thundercracker led suppression against the northern anti-air batteries while Skywarp repeatedly appeared inside sensor shadows, forcing Iacon’s defense net to overcorrect. Dirge held the western elevation lanes, Ramjet and Thrust broke counterflights before they could form.
Soundwave kept their channels clean.
Too many units in one sky could become noise.
He prevented that.
A Seeker trine requested permission to pursue a damaged Autobot flyer toward the inner towers.
Denied.
Starscream denied it first.
Soundwave reinforced the denial.
“No pursuit beyond tower line.”
The trine broke off.
A ground unit reported heavy resistance near the eastern barricade and requested air support.
Starscream answered before Soundwave routed the request fully.
“Negative. Tower density too high. Mark target for artillery.”
Soundwave shifted the request to artillery command.
A moment later, Decepticon fire struck the marked barricade from ground range instead of wasting Seekers in bad air.
Correct.
Everywhere, the offensive pressed.
Everywhere, Iacon bent.
But it did not break.
Then the Autobot channels changed.
Soundwave felt it across the network before the visual feed confirmed it.
The delay vanished.
Not reduced.
Vanished.
Commands that had been moving through separate defensive structures suddenly aligned into one sequence. Northern wall. Eastern mobile units. Inner artillery. Civilian corridor locks. Medical withdrawal lanes. Every piece shifted together.
Optimus Prime had entered command.
“Prime active,” Soundwave transmitted.
Megatron’s optics lifted from the map.
“Where?”
Soundwave searched.
The answer came as the eastern gate opened.
Not fully.
Not enough to release an army.
Enough to let one through.
Optimus Prime emerged from Iacon beneath the shadow of the capital’s outer wall, red and blue armor catching the light of weapons fire around him. Ironhide moved on his right. Prowl remained farther back, already directing units into new alignments. Behind them, Autobot defenders surged—not chaotically, not desperately, but with purpose.
Optimus did not charge blindly.
He moved toward the pressure point that mattered most.
The eastern assault line.
Soundwave tracked his path and understood immediately.
Prime was not trying to win the entire field.
He was trying to change the shape of it.
The first Decepticon unit that met him broke formation.
Not from fear.
From impact.
Optimus hit the line with controlled force, striking through the lead unit, turning to block a second, then using the angle to open space for Iacon’s defenders behind him. His weapon fire was precise. He disabled rather than wasted shots. He took ground only where it altered movement.
He was not fighting like Sentinel.
Sentinel had advanced as authority.
Optimus advanced as center.
Units moved around him because he made them more effective.
Soundwave’s threat assessment rose.
“Prime engaging eastern line,” he reported.
Megatron stepped away from the projection.
Finally.
“Hold the assault. Do not collapse around him.”
Soundwave transmitted the correction instantly.
“Maintain pressure. Do not converge on Prime.”
That order mattered.
Every Decepticon soldier who saw Optimus wanted to react. Some with aggression. Some with uncertainty. Some with the instinct to crush the symbol before it grew larger.
Converging would have created exactly what Optimus needed.
A dense target.
A heroic stand.
A story.
Soundwave denied him that.
He kept the lines moving.
But Optimus cut through the first wave anyway.
A heavy Decepticon moved to stop him and was driven backward into the wreckage of a barricade. Two more attempted to flank him. Ironhide intercepted one, slamming him aside with enough force to shatter the road plating. The second reached Optimus and fell within seconds, knocked down and left alive but out of the fight.
Prowl’s signals moved behind them.
Not visible to most.
Visible to Soundwave.
Prowl was opening lanes, not fighting directly. He moved units where Optimus had created space. He prevented Autobot enthusiasm from becoming a reckless surge. He was using Optimus as both shield and wedge.
Effective.
Dangerous.
Megatron entered the field.
His arrival changed Decepticon channels instantly.
Signals steadied. Ground units corrected. The eastern line, which had begun to distort around Optimus’s advance, hardened again.
Optimus looked up as Megatron approached.
Across the battlefield, through smoke and artillery fire, the two commanders saw each other for the first time since the private channel.
Soundwave held every surrounding line in place.
He knew what Megatron wanted.
Prime had come out.
Now the war would answer him.
Megatron’s voice crossed the battlefield, low and carrying.
“Optimus Prime.”
Optimus stopped just beyond a shattered barricade. Ironhide remained to his right. Prowl stayed behind the forward line, optics scanning every angle.
“Megatron.”
The name carried no fear.
Megatron’s cannon shifted slightly.
“You should have remained behind your walls.”
“And let you decide who Iacon becomes?”
“You believe you can stop this?”
“No,” Optimus said. “I believe we can.”
Autobot signals surged.
Not wildly.
Together.
Soundwave marked it.
Even his words reorganized them.
Megatron fired first.
The blast tore through the space where Optimus had stood, but Prime had already moved, not away from the battlefield but into it. He crossed the distance with surprising speed for his larger frame, deflecting the edge of the blast with his weapon and driving into Megatron’s reach.
Their first collision shook the eastern line.
Megatron struck with brutal force, and Optimus met it directly.
Not as Sentinel had.
Sentinel had redirected, calculated, attempted to turn Megatron’s strength aside.
Optimus absorbed enough to hold position, then answered with a strike that forced Megatron to shift his footing.
Soundwave registered the reaction across both armies.
Decepticon surprise.
Autobot hope.
Dangerous.
“Maintain engagement discipline,” Soundwave transmitted. “Do not converge.”
Starscream’s voice cut through the air channel.
“Upper wings, hold. No descent unless I command it.”
The sky obeyed.
Below, Megatron and Optimus fought amid the broken barricades while the offensive continued around them. Soundwave held the entire shape together. Ground units pressed Iacon’s outer lines. Seekers suppressed tower guns. Blitzwing continued driving pressure through the northern breach. Shockwave monitored triple-changer strain. Scrapper’s bridge teams moved toward the southern supports.
All of it at once.
Every front.
Every channel.
Every shift.
And at the center, Optimus Prime refused to fall.
Megatron drove him backward with a heavy strike that dented armor across his chest. Optimus staggered, recovered, and turned the next blow aside enough to counter with a hard strike to Megatron’s side. Megatron absorbed it and shoved him back through the remains of the barricade.
Ironhide moved forward.
Optimus lifted one hand.
Stopped him.
Soundwave saw it.
Prime did not want intervention.
Not yet.
Megatron saw it too.
His mouth curved faintly.
“Still standing in front of others.”
Optimus’s optics narrowed.
“Still mistaking that for weakness.”
They clashed again.
The eastern assault line trembled around them.
For several moments, neither side gained clear advantage.
Then Megatron changed the field.
“Deploy Devastator.”
The order struck the network like a massive gate opening.
Soundwave transmitted it immediately.
“Constructicons: advance to breach vector. Combination authorization pending.”
Across the southern approach, six signals shifted.
Scrapper.
Hook.
Bonecrusher.
Long Haul.
Mixmaster.
Scavenger.
The Constructicons moved toward Iacon.
The Constructicons moved before the battlefield understood what was happening.
Across the southern assault corridor, six separate signals broke from the advancing ground columns and accelerated toward the breach zone. Dust and smoke rolled around them as they pushed through the damaged industrial lanes leading toward Iacon’s outer defenses.
Soundwave tracked all six simultaneously.
Scrapper at the center.
Hook maintaining rear alignment.
Long Haul carrying the heaviest armor load.
Bonecrusher advancing aggressively ahead of formation despite repeated correction prompts.
Mixmaster and Scavenger adjusting route angles to compensate for collapsed roadway and artillery impact zones.
Their channels overlapped constantly.
Not confusion.
Synchronization.
“Southern vector opening,” Soundwave transmitted. “Constructicons approaching combination threshold.”
Megatron and Optimus were still locked against one another near the eastern line when the first Decepticon units realized what was moving through the smoke behind them.
Morale shifted immediately.
Devastator was not merely a weapon.
He was inevitability made visible.
Autobot channels reacted too.
Fear.
Warnings.
Redirect requests.
Prowl’s signal sharpened at once.
He saw the threat immediately.
Optimus did too.
Soundwave marked the exact moment Prime’s attention divided.
Megatron saw it and struck hard, driving Optimus backward through a fractured barricade support. Metal screamed beneath the impact as Prime hit the ruined structure and rolled free before Megatron’s next shot tore through the wreckage behind him.
“Your attention slips,” Megatron said.
Optimus regained footing and glanced once toward the southern line.
That was enough.
He understood exactly what was coming.
Across the battlefield, the Constructicons reached formation range.
“Combine.”
Soundwave transmitted the authorization directly.
The response hit the network like heavy machinery locking into place.
Scrapper transformed first.
Then the others followed.
Massive components shifted through smoke and artillery fire while Decepticon and Autobot forces alike pulled away from the forming gestalt. Towers shook as Devastator rose piece by piece above the southern breach lane, green and purple armor catching flashes of weapons fire across the battlefield.
The giant machine finished combining with a roar of grinding systems and stabilizing locks.
Devastator stood.
Even at distance, the battlefield changed around him.
Autobot defensive lines bent instinctively away from the advancing titan. Decepticon channels surged with renewed aggression. Ground units that had struggled for cycles suddenly pushed forward again beneath the shadow of the gestalt.
Soundwave routed immediate corrections through the network.
“Maintain lane spacing. Do not compress around Devastator.”
The order mattered.
Devastator was powerful enough to distort allied formations if left unchecked. Soldiers wanted to follow directly behind him, to let the giant machine absorb the battle for them.
That created weakness.
Soundwave denied it before it formed.
Devastator began advancing toward Iacon.
Each step crushed damaged roadway beneath his weight. Artillery struck him from the outer towers, detonating harmlessly across his armor as he forced himself through the breach corridor.
“Target acquired,” Devastator growled across the channel. “Iacon.”
The single word rolled through multiple frequencies at once.
Megatron’s mouth curved faintly.
“There,” he said to Optimus. “That is the future you cannot stop.”
Optimus looked past him toward the advancing titan.
Then he made a decision.
Soundwave saw it happen before the battlefield understood.
Prime disengaged.
Not retreat.
Redirection.
Megatron lunged after him immediately, but Optimus had already shifted the engagement angle, forcing Megatron to pursue rather than contain. Prime drove through the eastern line toward the southern breach route where Devastator continued advancing toward the city.
“Prime changing vectors,” Soundwave transmitted instantly.
Starscream answered first from above.
“He’s going for Devastator.”
“Confirmed.”
Starscream’s wings cut sharply across the upper battlefield as his trine descended to intercept. Thundercracker and Skywarp followed close behind while the broader Seeker formations tightened aerial suppression around the southern corridor.
The sky erupted.
Autobot flyers rose from Iacon’s outer towers at the same moment the Seekers descended, and Starscream hit them before they fully formed. One Autobot spiraled downward trailing fire almost immediately. Another broke apart under concentrated fire from Thundercracker’s cannons.
But Starscream’s focus remained lower.
On Optimus.
“He’s fast,” Skywarp muttered across the channel.
“He’s focused,” Starscream corrected.
Optimus drove through the battlefield below, cutting directly through the shifting combat lanes instead of trying to avoid them. Decepticon soldiers moved to intercept and were thrown aside almost immediately. One heavy unit struck him from the flank and was driven into the ground hard enough to crater the roadway.
Prime never slowed.
Soundwave understood the pattern.
Optimus had identified the critical point.
Not Megatron.
Not the eastern line.
Devastator.
He understood systems.
The realization tightened through Soundwave’s processing layers instantly.
Dangerous.
Very dangerous.
“Constructicons,” Soundwave transmitted, “Prime approaching southern breach corridor. Maintain defensive awareness around Scrapper.”
Because Scrapper mattered most.
Not physically.
Structurally.
Scrapper held Devastator together. Hook stabilized. Long Haul anchored weight distribution. Mixmaster managed rotational balancing. Bonecrusher and Scavenger amplified force output.
But Scrapper unified intention.
Without Scrapper, Devastator destabilized.
Soundwave knew that.
Shockwave knew that.
Megatron knew that.
And now—
possibly—
Optimus Prime knew it too.
Devastator reached the outer defense line and drove one massive fist into the barricade wall. The impact shattered plating across the entire southern sector. Autobot defenders scattered backward as cracks spread through the support structure.
Iacon shook.
“Barrier integrity failing,” Soundwave transmitted.
Megatron advanced through the eastern corridor behind Optimus, blasting apart damaged barricades and forcing Decepticon ground units forward behind him.
“Contain Prime!” Megatron ordered.
They tried.
Optimus broke through them anyway.
Ironhide surged behind him with several heavy Autobots while Prowl redirected support units toward the widening southern breach. The Autobots were no longer reacting blindly to Devastator’s presence.
They were organizing around stopping him.
Starscream dove low across the corridor and unleashed concentrated fire ahead of Optimus’s path, forcing Prime to change direction rather than continue straight toward the gestalt.
Good.
For half a second.
Then Optimus used the altered route instead of resisting it.
He angled through the collapsed side structures bordering the breach corridor and vanished briefly beneath the heavy smoke rolling around Devastator’s legs.
Starscream’s optics narrowed.
“Where did he—”
Soundwave found him first.
“Lower elevation. Structural cover.”
Devastator swung downward suddenly, smashing apart the ruined support tower Prime had moved beneath. The entire structure collapsed in an avalanche of metal and dust.
For a moment, Soundwave lost the signal.
Then Optimus emerged through the debris directly beneath Devastator’s forward line.
Too close.
Much too close.
“Scrapper!” Soundwave warned.
Devastator reacted a fraction too slowly.
Because Devastator was one mind.
Optimus was one mech.
Prime drove upward through the opening beneath Devastator’s torso and struck hard into the gestalt’s chest assembly. Not random force.
Targeted.
Scrapper.
The impact echoed across every Constructicon signal at once.
Devastator staggered.
Soundwave’s processors flared warnings immediately.
Combination stability dropping.
Scrapper’s signal destabilizing.
Hook transmitting emergency correction.
Long Haul attempting weight compensation.
Too late.
Optimus struck again.
The second hit drove directly into Scrapper’s central frame connection.
Scrapper’s signal vanished.
Not dead.
Offline.
Cold.
Devastator froze mid-step.
The giant machine swayed violently as the synchronization between components failed all at once. Bonecrusher roared across the internal channel. Mixmaster lost rotational balance. Scavenger attempted emergency stabilization.
Impossible.
Without Scrapper, the gestalt could not hold.
Devastator broke apart.
The massive frame separated violently across the breach corridor as the Constructicons crashed back into individual forms. Long Haul slammed into the shattered roadway hard enough to split it apart. Hook rolled across debris while already trying to reestablish command links. Bonecrusher hit in vehicle mode and carved a trench through the battlefield before transforming back with weapons already active.
Scrapper did not move.
Optimus landed hard among the wreckage, damaged but standing.
The battlefield stopped.
Not completely.
But enough.
Enough for every Decepticon unit nearby to understand what had happened.
Prime had stopped Devastator before he reached Iacon.
Megatron saw it.
Starscream saw it.
Soundwave processed it immediately.
Not brute force.
System understanding.
Optimus had identified the critical component and removed it with surgical precision under battlefield pressure.
That was not luck.
That was intelligence.
“Scrapper offline,” Soundwave transmitted across command channels. “Devastator deployment failed.”
Silence answered for half a second.
Then Megatron roared across the battlefield and charged directly toward Optimus Prime.
The war surged violently back into motion around them.
